Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, co-leaders of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration, recently made their way to Capitol Hill.

Their mission? To present their ambitious plan to slash $2 trillion in wasteful government spending to lawmakers.

According to The Gateway Pundit, the duo had a scheduled meeting with Republican lawmakers on Thursday to discuss their innovative program designed to curb government waste. The initiative has been gaining traction, with Congressmen Aaron Bean (R-FL) and Pete Sessions (R-TX) launching a DOGE Caucus last month. The caucus, which aims to support Musk and Ramaswamy in their endeavor, has also seen the addition of Reps. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) and Ralph Norman (R-SC). Even Democrat Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) has reportedly agreed that “reducing ineffective government spending should not be a partisan issue,” pledging his support to the Republican caucus.

In a parallel move, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has announced plans to chair a DOGE House Oversight Subcommittee. The subcommittee's mission, as Greene stated, is to “identify and investigate the waste, corruption, and absolutely useless parts of our federal government.”

The Senate has also seen the establishment of a DOGE Caucus, initiated by Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), who has recently faced criticism for opposing Trump's nominees. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Budd (R-NC), Mike Lee (R-UT), Rick Scott (R-FL), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and James Lankford (R-OK) have all pledged their support to the new caucus.

However, not all lawmakers are convinced that DOGE will achieve its lofty goals. Rep Max Miller has reportedly expressed skepticism, stating that the proposed cuts are not grounded in "reality." Another lawmaker, speaking anonymously, voiced concerns about the feasibility of the proposed solutions, hinting at a lack of unanimous GOP support.

The Hill reported that the meeting with Musk and Ramaswamy left some members skeptical about the possibility of achieving $2 trillion in spending cuts. One Republican lawmaker, granted anonymity, pointed to the slim majority in the House and the filibuster issue in the Senate as potential roadblocks.

The Republican majority in the House will be 219-215 at the start of the new session, due to Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-Fla.) decision to leave Congress despite winning reelection. This majority will then decrease to 217-215 when two other Republicans depart for Trump administration posts.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) noted in a post that the biggest obstacles to DOGE's success will likely be lawmakers resistant to the proposed spending cuts. However, Crane expressed optimism, stating that Musk's promise to create a 'Naughty and Nice' list of those obstructing their efforts gave him hope.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) also spoke about the 'naughty and nice list for members of Congress based on their spending habits with their voting card.' This list will be used to publicly score lawmakers' voting records ahead of the 2026 elections. Green also mentioned potential plans for a weekly podcast or report to communicate with the American people.

Green further elaborated on her DOGE subcommittee's plans to expose "every single unelected bureaucrat, every single agency that is wasting the American people's money, and the big government departments that need to be exposed for how they're not serving the American people."

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed his excitement to work with Musk and Ramaswamy on creating "a leaner, more efficient government." He emphasized that the federal government is far too large and inefficient, and that "the American taxpayers deserve better."

In a press briefing, Johnson explained that the meeting with DOGE was the beginning of a journey towards a more efficient government. He highlighted the need for a government that is leaner, more responsive, and more focused on its primary objectives. Johnson also noted that the DOGE effort will be a bipartisan one, with several Democrat colleagues expressing interest in joining the initiative.

In a time where government efficiency is paramount, the DOGE initiative, despite facing skepticism, represents a significant step towards achieving this goal. With the backing of influential figures like Musk and Ramaswamy, and the support of lawmakers across the aisle, the potential for meaningful change is palpable. As the nation watches, the success of DOGE could herald a new era of government efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
