Jen Psaki, MSNBC host and former press secretary for President Joe Biden, discussed the situation on "Morning Joe" on Friday, suggesting a significant disparity between public and private conversations surrounding the nomination.
According to Raw Story, Psaki spoke with "Morning Joe" co-hosts Willie Geist and Jonathan Lemire, highlighting the contrast between the public and private discourse. "I think there's what's happening publicly and then there's what's happening privately and what's happening privately really tells you the whole story with nominations," she stated. Psaki went on to reminisce about a time when senators were more transparent about their voting intentions. However, she noted that the current political climate, particularly among Republican senators, is marked by a silent defiance due to fear of becoming a target of Trump.

Psaki drew parallels between the situation with Hegseth and the failed nomination of Matt Gaetz for attorney general. "That's what you saw with Matt Gaetz and I think that's what you're seeing right now with Pete Hegseth," she said. The MSNBC host also referenced comments made by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who suggested that a significant number of Republicans could oppose Hegseth's nomination. "What was interesting, I don't know if you all saw Blumenthal, comments yesterday with the senator from Connecticut, a Democrat, who said there are eight to ten Republicans or five to ten maybe he said –– which is quite a range –– who he thinks would oppose Hegseth."

Psaki predicted a quiet demise for Hegseth's nomination in the coming days. "What I expect is going to happen is this is going to be quietly a nomination that is killed over the next couple of days," she forecasted. She suggested that influential figures such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell may communicate to the Trump team that Hegseth simply lacks the necessary votes.

The question then arises as to what Trump's next move will be. Psaki posed, "Then Trump has to decide what he wants to do from there. Does he pick another nomination? We're already seeing names floating out there, which is coming from somewhere in the Trump orbit, so that tells you a lot." As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Trump team will respond to the mounting opposition to Hegseth's nomination.
