Despite his initial disapproval, Willis has come to appreciate the joy the music brings to Trump's supporters.
In an interview with Todd Piro on Fox News, as reported by Mediaite, Willis explained his change of heart. "I decided to allow the president-elect’s continued use of [our music] because he seems to genuinely, genuinely like the song and so many other artists were stopping him from using their music," Willis stated. He further revealed that he had contacted Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) to prevent the termination of Trump's political use license for their music, as it appeared to bring "so much joy to the American people."
In the past year, Willis had asked Trump to refrain from using not only their signature song but also another hit from their repertoire. However, he acknowledged that Trump's use of their music had unexpectedly boosted its popularity, propelling it onto the Billboard charts despite the songs being decades old.

While Willis has warmed to Trump's use of their music, he expressed reservations about the band performing at the President-elect's inauguration. The band, he explained, has traditionally avoided political endorsements. "If you were to ask me today if the Village People would perform at the inauguration, I would probably say not because we’d be concerned about endorsement," he said.

However, Willis did not completely rule out the possibility. He acknowledged that the band's recent success, largely due to Trump's promotion, might lead them to "seriously consider" performing at the event. "The president-elect has done so much for [our music] and brought so much joy to so many people, the song has actually gone back to number one, and it’s still number one today, so if he were to ask the Village People to perform the song live for him, we’d have to seriously consider it," he stated.
