The New York Times, a publication often seen as leaning towards liberal viewpoints, has recently come under fire for its portrayal of women in a controversial article.

The piece in question, published on Thursday, delves into the contentious issue of Blair Flemming, a biological male, participating in the San Jose State University Spartans women's college volleyball team.

According to Gateway Pundit, the Times' article has sparked a wave of criticism, with several teams in the Mountain West Conference choosing to forfeit games rather than risk their players' safety. The inclusion of Flemming has also led to a lawsuit against the Mountain West, with the claim that allowing Flemming to compete at San Jose State infringes upon Title IX and the players' First and 14th Amendment rights.

The New York Times, in its coverage of the Flemming controversy, has been accused of erasing the concept of womanhood, referring to biological women as "non-transgender women." The Times cites USA Volleyball's website, which states that androgenic hormones, including testosterone, could potentially provide trans athletes with an "unfair competitive advantage." Therefore, the organization mandates that athletes assigned male at birth must undergo hormone therapy to compete in the women's category. The N.C.A.A. asserts that trans volleyball players are eligible to play if their testosterone level is less than 10 nanomoles per liter, a level that is at least four times higher than the upper limit for non-transgender women and within the typical range for adult men.

This portrayal of women by the Times has drawn severe backlash on social media. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova expressed her disapproval, stating, "NYT- you stink. We are women, not NOT TRANSGENDER WOMEN. Just WOMEN will do in the future." British Olympian Sharron Davies echoed this sentiment, writing, "Written in the NYT … women are now Non-transgender women! Just wow! How anyone can say this isn’t a men’s rights movement I’ll never know, whilst women lose their rights, their words, their safeguards, their sports, their sex discrimination laws… I will never understand."

Adding to the chorus of criticism, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) remarked, "The New York Times everybody where women are defined as ‘non-transgender women.’ What bs." These reactions underscore the ongoing debate surrounding the participation of trans athletes in women's sports, a topic that continues to divide opinion and stir controversy.
