He claimed that conservative figures like Riley Gaines and Libs of TikTok were "viciously attacking" him for advocating the abolition of these "horrible forced outing policies."

Wiener expressed concern over the fact that "school districts, even in California, are requiring - mandating that if a teacher learns that a kid is using different pronouns or dressing a certain way or wearing certain makeup, right, just identifying as trans or nonbinary, requiring that that teacher immediately call the kid’s parents to tell them." He warned that such actions could potentially lead to "violence against that kid at home, which could lead to the kid being kicked out and becoming homeless."

Wiener emphasized that the decision to come out to parents should be the child's alone, stating, "I want to be very clear, the only person whose business it is when, whether, how they come out to their parents, is that kid. The California Senate passed AB-1955 earlier in June, and the bill is now awaiting a vote in the Assembly. The bill was passed along party lines in the Senate, with all 29 Democrats voting in favor and their eight Republican colleagues voting against.

The bill aims to prevent school districts and governing bodies of other educational institutions from "enacting or enforcing any policy, rule, or administrative regulation that requires an employee or a contractor to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by law, as provided."

Kelly Seyarto opposed the bill, arguing that "If we include parents, that's the best way to take something from people being angry and mad to developing a solution that works for everybody." Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council, cautioned against "assum[ing] that all parents are unsafe." These conservative voices highlight the importance of parental involvement in children's lives and warn against blanket assumptions about parental attitudes towards their children's gender identity.
