A tragic drunk driving incident in Long Island, New York, has resulted in a man being handed a prison sentence for causing the deaths of a married couple, leaving their two daughters parentless, according to the Daily Caller.

The fatal accident occurred in August 2023 when Sotirios Spanos veered into the lane of Ismenia and Odalis Urena, resulting in a head-on collision. Spanos admitted guilt on April 23 to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault, and driving while intoxicated (DWI), as reported by CBS News.

The couple's orphaned daughters, aged 15 and 9, made emotional pleas in court during Spanos's sentencing, urging the judge to impose the maximum penalty. The elder daughter expressed her anguish, stating, "You have made my life miserable. You should be ashamed of your actions." The younger girl echoed her sister's sentiments, saying, "Losing my parents has changed my whole entire life."

Spanos's blood alcohol level was reportedly double the legal limit at the time of the crash, which prosecutors claim followed a dispute he had while on a date. His legal representatives cited a history of alcoholism and addiction, emphasizing his deep remorse. "I accept full responsibility. I never intended this epitome of stupidity and irresponsibility. There is no punishment too great," Spanos expressed during a lengthy apology, CBS News reported.

Judge Howard Sturim handed down a sentence of 7-21 years in prison to Spanos, marking the end of a case that underscores the devastating consequences of drunk driving.
