Marilyn Mosby, the former Baltimore District Attorney, is reportedly seeking a presidential pardon as she faces potential decades-long imprisonment for perjury and mortgage fraud charges.

The 44-year-old ex-prosecutor has maintained her innocence, asserting to MSNBC's Joy Reid that she has not committed any illegal or criminal acts. She further suggested that a pardon from President Biden would be an 'appropriate' response to her conviction.

Mosby has characterized her conviction as a 'political attack,' with Reid attributing her legal troubles to her decision to charge police officers involved in the contentious 2015 death of Freddie Gray. This decision, Reid suggested, placed Mosby 'on the other side of the courtroom.' Mosby's sentencing is scheduled for May 23, following a jury verdict that found her guilty of illicitly withdrawing funds from her city retirement account and providing false information on a mortgage application for a Florida property.

During her trial, the court heard allegations that Mosby had falsified information on her mortgage application for a $428,000 home in Long Boat Key, Florida. This included a fraudulent claim that she had received a $5,000 gift from her husband. Prosecutors argued that Mosby had claimed the $5,000 gift to secure a lower interest rate, while in reality, she had transferred the funds to her husband, who then returned them in a financial maneuver.

In her conversation with MSNBC, Reid expressed surprise that Mosby was prosecuted for withdrawing 'her own money,' suggesting that Mosby's previous clashes with Republicans may have made her a target. Mosby, a progressive whose lenient stance on crime was blamed for escalating crime rates in Baltimore, was indicted by Democrat US Attorney Erek Barron. Her trial was overseen by Biden-nominated Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby, according to the Capital Gazette.

Speaking in the third person, Mosby suggested that her actions as State's Attorney have led to her current predicament. She expressed hope that the people she advocated for would now rally behind her. "If they can do this to Marilyn Mosby, who had the audacity to challenge the status quo, they can do this to anybody," she stated.

Mosby's plea for a presidential pardon coincides with an online petition to President Biden that has garnered nearly 10,000 signatures. While Mosby did not initiate the petition, she has reportedly been promoting it. Despite her belief that a pardon would be 'appropriate,' she has not yet submitted an application to the Office of the Pardon Attorney, which reviews cases and makes recommendations to the president.

When questioned about the pardon, Mosby reiterated her innocence, stating, "I know that I've done absolutely nothing wrong, nothing criminal, and to be separated from my children for 40 years as a result of withdrawing $90,000 of my own money, it just makes absolutely no sense."

However, Mosby's critics have argued that her 'failed leadership' exacerbated Baltimore's crime problems. Medal of Valor recipient and police officer Dave Goitia told DailyMail.com following her conviction in February, "The consequences of that failed leadership are going to last for generations."

Mosby faced criticism for her handling of the controversial death of Freddie Gray in 2015. Gray's death in police custody sparked riots and looting across the city until Mosby brought charges against six police officers who arrested him. After failing to secure convictions against any of the officers amid claims the charges were unjust, some in law enforcement argued she succumbed to pressure from rioters and targeted the officers as 'sacrificial lambs.'

Mosby also had her own brushes with the law, including a $45,000 tax lien on one of her fraudulent Florida properties despite reportedly earning almost $250,000 a year. Mosby lost re-election in 2022 after being indicted by a federal grand jury, with her successor Ivan Bates taking a tougher stance on crime.

The federal criminal charges stemmed from allegations that Mosby claimed a pandemic-related hardship to make early withdrawals from her retirement account, then used that money for down payments on the Florida properties. Prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky alleged at her trial that she repeatedly lied on the mortgage applications, telling the court, "She was the top prosecutor in the city of Baltimore and oversaw hundreds of lawyers. You know what prosecutors know a lot about? Fraud. Mortgage fraud."
