In an escalating series of events, Russia has reportedly launched a missile assault against Ukraine, seemingly targeting the nation's energy infrastructure.

This information comes amidst claims from Russia that it has intercepted over 60 Ukrainian drones in the southern Krasnodar region.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported on Saturday that Russia had fired 34 missiles at Ukraine during the night, with Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepting 21 of these.

Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine's Minister of Energy, revealed via a Telegram post that energy facilities in the southern city of Dnipropetrovsk and the western cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv had been attacked. He also reported that an engineer had sustained injuries during these attacks.

Private energy operator DTEK confirmed that four of its thermal power plants had been damaged and mentioned unspecified "casualties". Earlier this month, Russia had destroyed one of Ukraine's largest power plants and inflicted damage on others in a significant missile and drone attack, marking a renewed effort to undermine Ukraine's energy facilities.

In response to these attacks, Ukraine has sought additional air defense systems from its Western allies. During a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Friday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the U.S. would supply Ukraine with extra munitions and equipment for its air defense launchers.

On the Russian side, the Defense Ministry claimed that Russian air defense systems had intercepted 66 drones over the southern Krasnodar region, with two additional drones being shot down over the Crimean Peninsula, annexed by Moscow.

Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, stated that Ukrainian forces had targeted an oil refinery and infrastructure facilities, but there were no casualties or significant damage. The regional department of the Emergency Situations Ministry reported a fire at the Slavyansk oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban during the attack.
