Poland’s Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, firmly asserted on Thursday that his country would not be compelled to adhere to European Union (EU) rules regarding migration, vowing to veto any proposal requiring countries to accept refugees.

Breitbart reported that Prime Minister Morawiecki declared in a video, “An attack on Europe is underway. Europe’s borders are not secure. The safety of the inhabitants of our continent is at stake.”

He intended to present a “plan for secure borders” to EU leaders during the Brussels summit. Earlier this month, EU member states achieved a breakthrough in reforming asylum laws, agreeing to share responsibility for unauthorized migrants entering Europe. The issue has been central to one of the EU’s most drawn-out political crises.

The agreement struck a balance between the obligation of countries where most migrants arrive to process and accommodate them and the requirement for other members to provide support, whether financially or by hosting refugees.

Prime Minister Morawiecki stated that his “plan is clear - ‘no’ to forced relocation of immigrants, ‘no’ to violations of veto rights by individual states, ‘no’ to violations of the principle of freedom and the principle of decision-making by states alone, and ‘no’ to Brussels-imposed penalties on states.”

In 2015, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic refused to accept migrant quotas imposed by the EU when over a million people, mostly Syrians fleeing conflict, entered Europe. The EU’s highest court ruled 2020 that these countries had failed to comply with the bloc’s laws.

According to Breitbart, unauthorized attempts to enter the EU have been increasing, with the border and coast guard agency Frontex reporting over 50,300 attempts from January to May. This is more than double that of last year’s period and the highest since 2017.

Sweden currently holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson saying during a press briefing, “We cannot continue a situation in which people without permits simply travel through Europe and to countries and live in circumstances that are not acceptable. This is one of the prevailing perspectives in Europe right now. We simply have to address this issue.”

According to a draft of the summit statement obtained by The Associated Press, the leaders will emphasize their commitment to dismantling the business operations of traffickers and smuggling networks and addressing the underlying causes. Despite its years-long negotiation, the statement faces opposition from Hungary and Poland.
