The incident occurred on May 18 and was captured on security video. The passenger, Omarri Tobias, began arguing with the driver, David Fullard, and demanded to be let off the bus between stops. Tobias then pulled out a gun, and Fullard responded by pulling out his own gun. The plexiglass barrier between them was shattered with bullet holes, and it is unclear from the video who shot first.
Other passengers can be seen rushing to the ground to avoid getting shot. Fullard followed Tobias off the bus and continued shooting after him. Both men sustained critical injuries but are expected to fully recover.

Fullard no longer works with the city bus operator after the company said he violated their policies against carrying weapons. Brent Cagle, the interim CEO of the Charlotte Area Transit System, stated that it was standard for drivers not to allow passengers to get off the bus between stops but that it was up to the driver's discretion. He also said Fullard failed to use various alarms provided to drivers for such altercations. Cagle added that the transit system prohibits anyone from possessing weapons in their vehicles.

Ken Harris, an attorney representing Fullard, said that Fullard had worked with the transit system for 20 years and loved his job. Harris stated that drivers fear violence at their jobs, citing incidents where drivers were assaulted, shot at, or killed. Harris also said that they want to address any issues that could come up related to this incident.

Tobias faces several charges over the incident, but it is unclear whether Fullard will face any charges.
