The World Health Organization officially ended the COVID-19 Global Health Emergency in early May.

According to Fox News, the organization issued a dire warning of the next global pandemic within the same month.

At a meeting of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said, "The threat of another variant emerging that causes new surges of disease and death remains, and the threat of another pathogen emerging with even deadlier potential remains." He noted that pandemics are "far from the only threat we face."

Dr. Ghebreyesus continued, "If we do not make the changes that must be made, then who will? And if we do not make them now, then when? When the next pandemic comes knocking — and it will — we must be ready to answer decisively, collectively, and equitably."

He said that although the pandemic shows a downward trend, the virus continued to kill and change. Despite declaring the end to the pandemic, WHO is recommending that people get booster vaccines this year to target the current dominant X.B.B. variant. Dr. Ghebreyesus said, "The risk remains of new variants emerging that cause new surges in cases and deaths."

Fox News reported that the WHO's Coronavirus Dashboard shows the virus has taken almost 7 million lives out of 766 million cases within three years. The doctor said mistakes were made during that pandemic, particularly regarding solidarity, coordination, and equity. He says that we should "promise ourselves and our children and grandchildren" that we will not make the same mistakes again.

Ghebreyesys said he was encouraged and relieved to see life "return to normal," even with the virus still spreading. He said the pandemic has proven that people worldwide need to be "better protected."

On May 11, the United States ended the Covid-10 Public Health Emergency. This came shortly after the end of the Global Health Emergency. The WHO's warning of another pandemic begs the question: is it as inevitable as it appears?
