Numbers recorded from April 2020 to July 2022 show the Big Apple at the top of the list of big cities with significant population decreases. For New York City, the biggest dip came between 2020 and 2021, with a decrease of just over 281,000.
New York City is one of many large cities losing residents. Three other U.S. cities had higher percentages of population decline during the same time period: San Francisco, CA, losing 7.5%, Lake Charles, LA, losing 6.9%, and Revere, Massachusetts, losing 5.9%.
Even with the population decline, New York City remains the largest city in the United States, with a population of more than 8 million people. The next largest cities are Los Angeles, with 3.8 million, and Chicago, with 2.6 million. The 4th and 5th largest cities are Houston, TX, with 2.3 million, and Phoenix, AZ, with just over 1.6 million.
