This is information coming from his wife, Neha Patel, when she spoke to investigators in January about the situation, reports Fox News.
Dharmesh Patel was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder after allegedly driving his Tesla off a cliff with his wife and their two children, aged 4 and 7, off Devil’s Slide near California Highway 1.
Neha Patel spoke to investigators and said, as reported in an affidavit about the situation recently uncovered by the San Francisco Chronicle: “He drove off. He’s depressed. He’s a doctor. He said he was going to drive off the cliff. He purposely drove off”.

The affidavit also notes that Dharmesh claims that the wreck was an accident and that he had merely pulled to the side of the road to try to repair a flat tire. Fox News reports that he has pled not guilty to all charges against him.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Mark Andrew reported that he did NOT believe that the Tesla was set on autopilot at the time of the wreck. Fox News reports that first responders went out to the wreck site on January 2 and saw a Tesla approximately 250 feet down the side of a cliff. They also noted victims were still moving around inside the vehicle. They jumped into action to save the lives of the victims of this wreck.

Rescuers got both children out of the vehicle using the “jaws of life” tool they sometimes rely on in these situations. Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe reported to Fox News Digital that the boy child had no physical signs of injury.

However, according to the DA’s office, the 7-year-old girl suffered “significant” injuries but was able to be released from the hospital fairly quickly. That is significantly good news amid a horrifying story that could have played out much worse for everyone.

The DA’s office also reported that Neha “suffered probably the most serious injuries” from the accident.
Witnesses and video from the incident appear to show Dharmesh driving the Tesla straight off the cliff of the road without even trying to brake or slow down the vehicle in any way. This is something that has many believing that there was truly no attempt to keep the Tesla from driving off the cliff.
