A special needs student in California was allegedly referred to as a bigot by her teacher for inadvertently not using the preferred pronouns.

Additionally, Fox News reports that the student did not want to engage in a lesson about what “scissoring” was in a sexual sense and refused to get undressed near male teachers.

Marina Vivar signed her daughter Thelma Gonzalez up for a course about health and relationships at Glendale High School. However, she checked a box to excuse her from learning about “anything LGBTQ+ or about sexual acts which were gay in nature.”

Vivar gave a speech to the Glendale City Council, saying she decided to exempt her daughter from these lessons. However, she says that her wishes were not being respected by the staff at the school. They appeared happy to ignore her desire as a parent to keep her child protected from learning about these things.

Gonzalez allegedly told her teachers she would not be participating in that portion of the class, and her teacher allegedly called her a “bigot” for making that choice. In reality, the choice was made by her mother and not by Gonzalez.

Vivar said that her daughter was unfamiliar with the terms being taught in the class and that they are not used around her house. She contends that her daughter would not have known about the words being taught if she hadn’t learned about them at school.

Gonzalez told the city council the following: “My teachers were going to send me to the principal office when I told them that it was against my beliefs and that I felt uncomfortable,”

According to Vivar, Glendale High’s principal Benjamin Wolf conducted an internal investigation, but nothing happened as a result.

Glendale High Communications Director Kristine Nam spoke to Fox News Digital about the situation and said:

“The lesson Ms. Vivar is referencing was a general lesson from the health textbook about making healthy decisions in your relationships. The teacher did ask Ms. Vivar’s daughter to refrain from making inappropriate remarks in response to a reference to LGBTQ+ relationships,”

Nam continued, “We have investigated the interaction and have not found any evidence that the teacher used inappropriate remarks [for instance, referring to the student as a ‘bigot’]. We will continue to thoroughly investigate.”

Gonzalez also stated that she felt uncomfortable about getting undressed while in gym class at school. Gonzalez said: “I once got in trouble in the girls’ locker room because I did not dress down in front of other people,” and “There are male teachers inside the girls’ locker room talking to Ms. Lewis. Her office [which is inside the locker room] has her door open, and there are male teachers inside her office.”
