The Archdiocese of New York has clarified the removal of the “God is Trans” exhibit that existed at a Manhattan Catholic church.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reports that the Archdiocese is investigating how it came to be in the first place.

The Church of St. Paul, the Apostle in New York City, hosted an exhibit titled “God is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey.” This exhibit discussed how God is transgender and claimed to map “the queer spiritual journey by three significant points: Sacrifice, Identity, and Communion.”

After learning of the exhibit, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of New York told the DCNF that the Church informed the Archdiocese of the exhibit’s removal.

The spokesperson said:

“The archdiocese was unaware of the exhibit before we learned about it from the media,” and “It is my understanding that the parish has removed the exhibit.”

Artist Adah Unachukwu created the exhibit and argued within the display that there is no devil, just past selves. It also asks questions such as:

“What does holiness look like?” and “What does your god look like?” according to the New York Post.

Many church-goers at that location expressed outrage about the fact that the exhibit was on display at the Church at all. However, others expressed joy at the idea that the Church might be more open to accepting people from the LGBTQ+ community.

Those who favored it said they wanted to see the Church become a more liberal space that welcomed people from all communities.

Bill O’Connor, a church member, spoke with the Post and said:

“The queer community has been accepted here for a long time now,” and “It’s wonderful having this here and a wonderful church.”

The Archdiocese initially told Newsweek that it was investigating the situation as of Tuesday and that it was seeking to get more information. It stated then that if media reports were accurate, it would have serious concerns related to this exhibit.
