The Washington Times reports that State Senate President Amy Sinclair and House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl endorsed Ron DeSantis in his lead-up to a trip to the state. It is important to note that Governor DeSantis has yet to announce his candidacy for President in 2024 officially, but many highly anticipate he will do so.

DeSantis plans to hold events in Sioux Center and Cedar Rapids on Saturday. This move will set him up for a showdown with former President Trump, who also has an event in Iowa on Saturday.

Trump has already picked up some endorsements from prominent Republicans as well. He also has a significant lead in nearly every early primary poll of the Republican field. However, some anticipate that there could be a shift when DeSantis officially announces his candidacy in the race.

Sinclair and Windschitl say DeSantis has a proven conservative record of tax cuts and parental rights. They also say DeSantis is better positioned to win the race in 2024 than former President Trump. They point out that President Trump has refused to admit a defeat in the 2020 election.

Mr. Windschitl spoke with the Iowa Register and said:
“We need a leader that’s looking forward towards the future, not a leader that’s looking in the rearview mirror and potentially going to be vindictive towards other people,” and “We need somebody [that’s] accountable to the people that [has] proven in their state that they can do this job and take that same prosperity and spread it throughout America.”

Mr. Trump has taken some shots at Governor DeSantis in an apparent bid to try to neutralize what could be one of his biggest rivals for the nomination. For example, Trump suggested that DeSantis needed his support to win his race in Florida in the first place. DeSantis narrowly won the Governor’s race in Florida in 2018 but cruised to an easy re-election to that seat in 2022.

Ron DeSantis has done all he can to avoid direct conflict with former President Trump on as many issues as possible. He wants to avoid starting any unnecessary fights with the former President, as he will likely need some Trump voters to switch over and vote for him in the primary process if he is to win the nomination.
