A YouTube attention seeker (aren’t they all?) is facing jail time after a particularly boneheaded stunt.

The Daily Mail reports that a YouTube channel pilot decided to crash his small engine jet for the clicks.

Trevor Jacob, 29, a former Olympic snowboarder and current pilot, posted a 13-minute video on YouTube in which he appears to have engine trouble in his single-engine plane. He recorded the footage while flying over part of California in 2021. Now, he is facing up to 20 years in prison after admitting that he attempted to obstruct a federal investigation into the wreckage of his plane.

The Daily Mail reports that the dramatic footage that he took generated more than 3 million views on YouTube alone. The video shows Trevor Jacob ejecting from the single-engine plane while holding his selfie stick. He parachuted into the Los Padres National Forest.

The ejection from the plane and all of the dramatic events he set up for this mid-air stunt were all captured by cameras mounted on the wing and tail of the aircraft. Jacob claimed he accidentally crashed the plane, but in a plea agreement he set up with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, he admitted that he created the series of events that would lead to his plane crash. He said that he did so as part of a sponsorship deal.

Jacob agreed to plead guilty to destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation. This charge can come with up to 20 years in prison, though it is likely that he will receive less than that given his agreement and cooperation.

The plea agreement clarifies that Jacob had an endorsement deal to make the video. It is also clear that he intended to avoid landing the plane successfully. The whole point of the video was to crash the plane intentionally.

The Daily Mail reports that the video shows Jacob ejecting from the plane and ultimately landing in the thick woods of the national park where he ended up. However, he also suggests in the video that he is horrified to learn that the water he packed with him has disappeared.

In the weeks after the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched an investigation into what had happened.

The FAA ordered Jacob to preserve the plane’s wreckage after this incident. Initially, he told officials he did not know where the plane had crashed. However, the plea agreement made him admit that he and a friend returned to the woods to determine where the wreckage ended.
