President Zelensky of Ukraine warned Russia will soon receive an “unpleasant surprise.”

This warning has put Russian troops on high alert, anticipating what those words might have meant.

Breitbart reports that this comes as the Russian invasion of Bakhmut appears to have slightly faltered. Russian troops are seemingly engaged in infighting and disagreements about how to move forward.

A report by Euronews states that Zelensky is planning a counterattack against Russia after it attacked the city of Bakhmut. However, the exact timing or nature of the attack is something Zelensky keeps tight to the vest. He is not giving up a lot of extra details.

He said, “I am not ready to communicate with you, to say when we will be advancing,” and “Because, to some extent, this prepares the enemy. And therefore, I would like it to be an unpleasant surprise, not the other way around.”

Zelensky did not state the nature of the attack, but he expressed optimism that the attack would be successful and be a good pushback against the efforts of the Russian troops.

Zelensky continued by saying, “I think we will achieve the appropriate result,” and “I can’t say that yet, because it’s a war,” when asked about the nature and timing of the attack.

Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, one of Russia’s most essential assets in Ukraine, appeared to attack Putin in an online video. This attack comes at the same time that Zelensky is gaining confidence in his statements about what Ukraine will do to combat Russia in any way it can.

Western commentators who saw the video uploaded by Prigozhin believe that he was referring to Putin when he referred to an official within the Russian government who thinks the man is a “good grandfather” but that he is actually “a complete asshole. The language here doesn’t appear to be all that coded at all. It seems pretty straightforward to many in the West that Prigozhin was taking direct shots at Putin.

All of this indicates at least some fracturing between different Russian leaders related to how things are moving forward with the war effort. Given this, it is interesting to see where the subsequent twists and turns in the Ukraine war might be.
