President Biden went with an awkward joke attempt at one of his latest appearances, and it has people cringing again.

The New York Post reports that the President joked about “thin” walls at his childhood home. This awkward attempt at a joke happened while he was delivering a speech about the debt ceiling in Westchester.

He gave the speech at SUNY Westchester Community College in New York. He took time to go after Republicans for opposing spending increases and insisting on not raising the debt ceiling until cuts got approved.

The Post reports that while talking about his middle-class roots, the President joked about growing up with a large family in a modest home in Delaware. He recalled the following:

“We lived in a three-bedroom, split-level home in a housing development that got … it was a nice area; that was when they were developing suburbia — with four kids and a grandpop living with us.”

He said, “I look back and wonder how thin those walls were for my mom and dad. But at any rate…”

This joke drew some laughter from the gathered audience, but some people stated it felt more like awkward laughter than a genuine feeling of enjoying the joke.

This awkward moment was not the first time President Biden mentioned the thin walls at his childhood home. It also happened in 2019 when then-candidate Biden stopped during his campaign in Iowa. He was giving a speech about the potential for upward mobility for middle-class Americans when we referred to the thin walls of the home he grew up in with his parents. To say that people feel uncomfortable when he makes this kind of joke is an understatement.

He told the following story in Iowa in 2019:

“It was after three years my dad was able to buy a [house], a three-bedroom house, with four kids and a grandpop living with us.” He continued, “It was OK. Although I do wonder how my parents got by — those walls were [awful] thin.”

Biden also told a similar story in Nevada in 2012 during an event.

During that speech, he said:

“It was wonderful for children. By the way, having your grandpop living with you, having your great-aunt, your uncle, for real,” and “Those walls were [awfully] thin. I wonder how the hell my parents did it. But that’s a different story.”

The President likes to lean in on this story, but his audiences might not like it quite as much.
