Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has referred to Putin as a “war criminal” after saying that his war in Ukraine is a “territorial dispute".

The Hill reported on this as Governor DeSantis may be a likely candidate for the GOP nomination for President in 2024. DeSantis is considered a top competitor to Donald Trump for the nomination. Officially, DeSantis has not thrown his hat into the ring for the nomination, but many expect him to do so.

“I think he is a war criminal,” said DeSantis on Piers Morgan Uncensored. DeSantis added, “I think he should be held accountable.”

This statement puts DeSantis on a different note than some other Republicans regarding the situation with Putin and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

However, The Hill reports that some establishment Republicans do appear to share views similar to those of DeSantis. For example, Senator Lindsey Graham said that those who don’t understand the threat of Russia “have seriously miscalculated one of the most obvious nexuses in the world.”

In the interview with Piers Morgan, DeSantis says that Putin has grander ambitions beyond Ukraine. Still, he does not feel that Putin has the military capacity to take on those ambitions.

The Hill reports that DeSantis said: “I think he’s got grand ambitions. I think he’s hostile to the United States,” and “But I think the thing that we’ve seen is he doesn’t have the conventional capability to realize his ambitions. And so he’s [basically] a gas station with [a bunch of] nuclear weapons.”

Last week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes accusations. That court accused him of trafficking Ukrainian children across borders. However, neither Russia nor the United States recognizes the jurisdiction of the ICC, so it is unlikely that Putin will legitimately face charges from that court.

On top of this, Putin has made diplomatic moves, with some in the United States worried. For example, he recently met with Chinese President Xi in Moscow. This meeting raises concerns that the relationship between Moscow and Beijing is growing tighter and could be problematic for the United States’ place in the world order.

If those two countries are growing tighter together, then it might be possible that other issues, such as a potential invasion of Taiwan, are not off the table.
