Stephen Smith's Mother Sends Letter To FBI Naming Buster Murdaugh As Suspect In Son's Murder

The Daily Mail reports that Stephen Smith was found dead on a rural South Carolina road eight years ago. That road was near the Murdaugh estate, and the family had long suspected Buster Murdaugh might have been involved in the murder of the young man.

However, that has only been the subject of rumors and speculation. There hasn’t been direct evidence that this was the case, but many believe that Buster Murdaugh was genuinely involved.

Investigators initially ruled Stephen Smith’s death a hit-and-run accident after discovering his body on July 8, 2015. However, after finding Buster’s brother and mother slain on the property of their own home in 2021, SLED announced that it was re-opening the investigation into Smith’s death.

The Daily Mail reports that Smith’s mother sent a letter to the FBI in 2016 claiming that Buster murdered her son because her son was gay. She claimed that Buster Murdaugh beat him to death with a baseball bat, resulting in his death. She also spoke with CNN about the situation and said:

“I felt my son [was] murdered, he [was] beaten to death, and I think it was a hate crime. And I don’t care what your name is. But who - whatever your name is, you need to be punished for what you did to my son.”

Smith’s mother says that local authorities have been doing everything possible to cover up the murder because of rumors that Buster Murdaugh and her son might have engaged in a romantic relationship. The accusation is that Buster and others might have murdered her son to try to cover up the relationship. Smith’s mother believes that local authorities are doing all they can to protect Buster because they are trying to defend and protect the Murdaugh family above all else.

The Daily Mail reports that Buster has already spoken out about this story before its resurfacing by saying that it is false that he has anything to do with the death of Stephen Smith.

His mother said:

“I have been fighting. [This] is what I have been fighting for,” and “I’m finally getting it. And I don’t know how to explain it, but I have a little [bit of] peace in my heart.”
