Florida might be taking an entirely different approach to a health crisis it is experiencing among teenagers.

Fox News reports that the state has gotten innovative in its approach to teenagers experiencing depression and suicidal tendencies.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that it sent off alarm bells throughout the country. The most concerning thing in the report of concern for every American was that an unsettling 42 percent of high school students had persistent feelings of depression in 2021, according to their data. They also found that 22 percent seriously considered suicide.

The increase in teen crisis is a serious issue and one that Florida is confronting with the recent initiative of a bipartisan plan. Legislation has been introduced in the state to tackle and address the issue.

Across the state, schools will now have a training program to assist teachers and their teenage students in identifying distressed teens.

The program is known as Teen Mental Health First Aid. It is meant to be a resource for teachers and students to recognize “symptomatic behavior” in teens, help those experiencing the symptoms, and direct them to appropriate adult care. The program is designed to have “first responders” standing by for teens facing mental health challenges or those in crisis.

The program has already been proven to have some success stories and stave off some would-be suicides and other devastating results.

Florida first lady Casey DeSantis has taken on a leading role in helping this program keep moving forward. She bases much of her work on this based on the “healthy kid” model. The model is based on the premise that all children will eventually face overwhelming obstacles they feel they cannot overcome. However, young people who are “resilient” can take on the challenges they are presented with, survive them, and emerge stronger. The initiative proposes resilience is something that can be taught and supported.
