According to a new warning by agave farmers, there is a potential tequila shortage.

Fox News reports that supply chain issues and more have contributed to the potential shortage of the agave crop necessary to make tequila.

Qui Tequila co-founder Pete Girgis said it is “too early to tell” if now is the time for consumers to stock up on tequila in case of shortages. Still, it is certainly not off the table, especially since American demand has increased.

Girgis said: “What I can tell you is this agave and tequila overall consumption has been skyrocketing. Agave prices have gone up 10 times from where they were 10 years ago,”. He added, “And right now, tequila has become one of the fastest-growing spirits in the country for the first time ever, outselling U.S. whiskey in this country.”

It is necessary to use the sap of the agave plant to make the tequila that so many people love. This crop can technically be grown anywhere but grows best in Mexico. That is also where a considerable portion of the world’s agave crop is produced. As such, the issues that might be coming up with the agave crop in Mexico could ripple through the entire tequila market for the planet.

Girgis explained that it takes approximately a decade to grow the agave crop. There is a concern that the rising costs of agave, supply chain issues, lack of rain, higher-than-average temperatures, and other problems are making tequila a good that is outside some people’s reach these days.

There is no easy fix for this problem. A lot goes into the growing of agave crops, and it is necessary to use all of those elements to get the best kind of agave crops grown worldwide.

“It’s generally a seven, eight, nine-year process to grow the agave, but what’s happening now is once the agave prices skyrocketed, many people, who it was really outside of their core center of focus, began becoming agave farmers and growing plants in Jalisco,” said Girgis and “So you’d find the local dentist is now an agave farmer really trying to take advantage of the opportunity that you’re seeing in the market.”

The situation agave farmers are experiencing can impact the entire agave market and many similar markets. With high demand, slow-growing crops, and extreme weather affecting the crops, tequila enthusiasts may find limited inventory on the shelves.
