In June 2021, renowned doctor and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser hit the streets of Ward 8 in the Anacostia neighborhood of southeast D.C. to promote the COVID-19 vaccine.

However, their efforts were met with intense scrutiny from an individual who refused to get the vaccine. This exchange was captured by PBS for its upcoming "American Masters" series, which seeks to provide viewers with in-depth profiles of important figures in American culture.

The man challenged the credibility of the vaccine, citing the short amount of time it took to develop it and questioning the data surrounding the number of deaths due to COVID-19. Bowser defended the vaccine by noting her own vaccination, but the man still refused, citing the need for incentivization and accusing the pandemic campaign of instilling fear. Another woman also expressed her doubts, asking if the vaccine cures or prevents the virus. Fauci responded, "No, On the very, very, very rare chance that you do get it even if you're vaccinated, it's a very – you don't even feel sick. It's like you don't even know you got infected. It's very, very good at protecting you."

These statements are backed up by the vaccination data available on Bowser's website, which indicates that there have been at least 60,000 breakthrough COVID cases in the city. Fauci also commented on other states that refused to mandate the vaccine, saying, "Oh my God, they're going to keep the outbreak smoldering in the country." According to PBS, Fauci's journey to battle vaccine hesitancy will be aired on March 21.
