TikTok is being pushed to sell to the United States or face a ban in the United States.

The 11th-hour lobbying blitz is supposed to help prevent the forced sale of the company. However, TikTok influencers will now flood Washington, DC, in protest.

A person who knows the plan says that dozens of creators will head to Washington, DC, next week and be there for three days. The person says there will be a press conference on Capitol Hill. Someone else states that TikTok is paying them to head to the nation’s capital.

According to TikTok spokesperson Jamal Brown, Washington should hear from influencers on the platform before making a decision. He says that our government needs to hear from people that the decision will directly impact.

That’s just one tactic the people behind the beloved app are employing to sway the government. Politico states, “The app’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, is also slated to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday.”

However, the government says that TikTok is a national security threat. Politico says, “The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the interagency board that issued the call, has spent years reviewing the potential national security risks posed by TikTok and the Chinese company that owns it: ByteDance.”

This first began when President Trump was in office. After becoming President, Biden withdrew the original orders to ban the app. However, now we’re seeing bipartisan support for a ban. The White House says it will support a bipartisan bill that could result in a ban on TikTok.

The Justice Department is also investigating TikTok for alleged spying on American citizens.

The app is currently banned on government phones, has been banned in other countries for similar reasons, and, most recently, the United Kingdom banned the app from being allowed on government phones.

China, of course, tells a different tale. According to them, the United States lacks evidence to support its claims, and America is trying to suppress a Chinese company. Wang Wenbin is a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry and recently spoke on the matter during a briefing. AP News says, “‘The U.S. should stop spreading disinformation about data security, stop suppressing the relevant company, and provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for foreign businesses to invest and operate in the U.S.,’ Wang said.”

However, just like America is concerned about the censorship of the app coming out of China, and the influence that the app could have on the two-thirds of teenagers that use it, China does the same thing. TikTok is one of the many social media apps banned in China.
