The FBI now offers a $20,000 reward for anyone with information regarding an American woman kidnapped from her residence.

The 63-year-old woman was allegedly abducted in early February.

According to the FBI’s office in Los Angeles, Maria del Carmen Lopez does have connections to Southern California. She was last seen at her Pueblo Neuvo home on February 9. Ktla.com says, “A spokesperson for the FBI said Lopez, who was born in Mexico but holds U.S. citizenship, has family in Los Angeles and Riverside counties and often travels back and forth between Mexico and Southern California.”

This reward and notice came within weeks of a group of Americans being kidnapped soon after crossing the border. Two were killed in the incident, and the others were eventually returned to the United States.

However, these are far from the only incidences of Americans being kidnapped in Mexico. According to Fox News, “Two sisters from a Texas border town and another woman also reportedly remain missing after driving to Montemorelos in Mexico’s Nuevo León state to sell clothing at a flea market in late February.”

Last October, a warning was issued to stay away from Colima state in Mexico, where Maria del Carmen Lopez lived. Mexican authorities continue to cooperate with the United States to conduct an investigation. However, this happened in February, and I haven’t heard of any leads regarding where she might be. The FBI continues to investigate the matter.

As more Americans come under threat in Mexico, it’s important to remember to check for advisories before traveling. It’s equally important to thoroughly examine a city or state before traveling through it. Some areas of Mexico are still heavily involved with drug cartels that are dangerous to everyone in the area, including American travelers just passing through.
