There’s always something happening in or near the Mexican-American border.

According to Reuters, authorities in Mexico discovered an abandoned truck trailer. But it wasn’t sitting empty. It was actually rather full. Inside the trailer in question were 343 migrants from multiple locations, including Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Of those, 103 were unchaperoned children. Most of the minors were from Guatemala. Twenty-eight of the migrants were traveling as families. Single adults traveling in the trailer were 212.

The trailer was discovered in Veracruz on the Cosamaloapan-La Tinaja highway. Veracruz is a state in the eastern part of Mexico. The country’s authorities found the trailer had been outfitted with a makeshift roof. It had been partially ventilated, and fans had been attached in an attempt to keep the occupants cool or at least have enough air circulating to keep them breathing and alive.

The trailer also had a second level inside. It had been put together using pieces of metal. The trailer floor was strewn with all sorts of trash, including many plastic bottles. For whatever reason, the driver abandoned the trailer, leaving the migrants to fend for themselves.

The New York Post reported that the National Migration Institute (NMI) issued a statement. It said the Veracruz family services system was poised to take custody of the children. It continued by addressing the fate of the adult migrants, which Mexican authorities would process. Once processed, the Mexican authorities would be able to determine the legal status of the migrants.

Video footage shot by the NMI showed a crowd of migrants being removed from the truck trailer. Many were young men, who appeared to be shirtless when they jumped from the truck’s bed. The majority of the occupants appeared to be teenage boys between 14 and 17 years of age, according to the New York Post.

In early 2023, 77 children without adults accompanying them were discovered by Mexican authorities near the Mexican-American border. Fifty-seven of the children were from Guatemala, with 20 others mostly from Chiapas, a southern state. Obviously, both the Mexican and American authorities will need to continue to keep an eye out for similar caravans of migrants traveling through areas near the southern border separating their respective countries.
