A letter issued last month from Governor Abbot to public universities and state agencies explained federal and state employment laws were being violated due to DEI being a part of the hiring practice. The Governor stated in the letter that the DEI practices were barred and hiring positions would be filled based on merit.
Texas A & M University System Chancellor John Sharp directed those in leadership positions of the 11 universities and eight agencies to stop asking anyone applying for a job to state their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion when filling out an employment application.

Sharp said Thursday that all A&M system universities and agencies are to review admissions and employment practices. Sharp said he is standardizing hiring practices throughout the system so that staff and faculty applications only require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research or teaching philosophies, and professional references.

In the directive, Sharp said, “No university or agency in the A & M System will admit any student, nor hire any employee based on any factor other than merit.”

On Thursday, Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall sent similar instructions to the seven universities in his system. On Friday, the University of Houston System Renu Khator alerted system employees that DEI statements would not be allowed when hiring or promoting individuals at its four universities.

Websites and any printed materials maintained by universities and system agencies regarding applications for employment and admissions practices were also directed to ensure these areas were updated to reflect the changes regarding DEI.
In a statement last week, UT System board Chair Kevin Eltife noted that the system strives to promote diversity among students and faculty and that “certain DEI efforts have strayed from the original intent to now imposing requirements and actions that, rightfully so, has raised the concerns of our policymakers around those efforts on campuses across our entire state.”
Governor Abbott’s chief of staff, Gardner Pate, wrote in his letter to university and state agency leaders, “The innocuous-sounding notion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has been manipulated to push policies that expressly favor some demographic groups to the detriment of others.”
