Senator John Fetterman was hospitalized after having a stroke during his campaign against Dr. Mehmet Oz.

He remains hospitalized for clinical depression but continues to do his duties as a Senator from his hospital bed, according to a report by Fox News.

Recently, Senator Fetterman co-sponsored rail safety legislation with other Democratic and Republican Senators, including Bob Casey, Sherrod Brown, JD Vance, Josh Hawley, and Marco Rubio. The Pennsylvania Capital Star reports that the Railway Safety Act of 2023 will enhance and improve rail safety procedures and protocols.

While the Senator is busy communicating with his staff and fellow Senators, some wonder how he can do the job while suffering from and being treated for clinical depression.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a medical professor at New York University, told Fox News Digital that while accepting depression as an illness and encouraging treatment, he finds it “very unusual” that the Senator is continuing his work schedule from his hospital room.

Siegel, also a physician, said, “we don’t know” how “severe” Fetterman’s depression is, the type of therapy he is receiving, and his response to the treatment. He noted it is standard procedure for an individual suffering from clinical depression, such as Fetterman, to stay in the hospital.

The professor/physician said, “mental illness and physical illness aren’t the same in terms of the level of impairment.” “So if you were to tell me somebody had a heart attack, they’re still in the hospital, can they be a senator? “And, in general, the answer would be no. My answer would depend on how their heart is doing right now.”

That if you’re in the hospital for severe depression, that your judgment is impaired, and that your ability to think clearly and rationally is impaired.” “But we don’t know that.”

Siegel speculated that Fetterman’s “doctors feel that he’s back up to a level of where he’s no longer severely depressed.” “But they’re afraid to let him out because they don’t know how he’ll do on the outside.” “So they’re keeping an eye on him while allowing him to work to restore his self-esteem, but they don’t feel he can be alone.”

Fetterman’s spokesperson, Joe Calvello, told Fox News Digital, “John is getting briefed daily by his staff and is in communication with his colleagues in the Senate.” “As we have said multiple times, this will be a weeks-long process.”
