An incident involving three students at Montgomery High School on Wednesday ended in tragedy when one of the 16-year-olds died due to stab wounds inflicted by another student who was only 15 years old.

According to Santa Rosa Police Chief John Crregan explained, during a news conference, two Montgomery High School juniors entered an art classroom where the third student was located and started fighting with the student. The classroom had around 30 other students in attendance.

Fighting continued but was broken up by teachers. At that moment, the 15-year-old freshman produced a folding knife and stabbed the two juniors.

Chief Cregan said, “It appears that there had been some previous altercations between these students.” Cregan said neither of the 16-year-olds was armed.

Santa Rosa City Schools superintendent Anna Trunnell said, “This is truly a sad day. The tragedy that happened here today is heartbreaking.”

At a news conference, several students asked about safety at the school and why officials had not done more to prevent the incident even though those in charge were aware of problems between the three students.

The officials did not respond to the student’s questions and left the news conference.

Trunnell said, “We are going to be assessing how we approach supporting our students and making sure that they know that this is a safe place, and we will be examining how exactly we’re going to do that."
