Apparently, “dressing to the nines” doesn’t always pay off, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez found out after attending the 2021 Met Gala in New York.

According to a report by Bloomberg, a congressional watchdog says the Democratic Congresswoman appeared at the gala decked out in a designer gown with “Tax the Rich” running down the back and that accepting the gown may have broken the rules.

The Office of Congressional Ethics created a report of the incident, which prompted the House Ethics Committee on Thursday to decide whether it should continue its investigation of whether Ocasio-Cortez violated rules by accepting what was deemed “impermissible gifts” to wear to the ball.

The report states, “But for the OCE opening this review, it appears that Representative Ocasio-Cortez may not have paid for several thousands of dollars’ worth of goods and services provided to her.”

According to a campaign staffer, Ocasio-Cortez could not explain why the $1,300 cost for the rental gown was reduced to $300. Another person the OCE wanted to interview declined to cooperate.

The report notes Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged, “there was a ball that was dropped,” and the delay in payments for the assorted goods and services was “deeply regrettable.” Ocasio-Cortez’s communications director Lauren Hitt said in a statement Thursday night that payments had been delayed and “the congresswoman finds these delays unacceptable, and she has taken several steps to ensure nothing of this nature will happen again.”

Hitt continued, “these delayed payments definitively do not rise to the level of a violation of House Rules.” Hitt added that the bills have since been paid by Ocasio-Cortez “from her own personal funds.”

David Mitrani, the council for Ocasio-Cortez, said, “However, while regrettable, this matter does not rise to the level of a violation of House Rules or of federal law. Even after OCE’s exhaustive review of the Congresswoman’s personal communications, there is no evidence that she ever intended to avoid these expenses. To the contrary, the record clearly shows that the Congresswoman always understood that she had to pay for these expenses personally - and she even worked with the undersigned counsel prior to the event to ensure that she complied with all applicable ethics rules.”

Fox News Digital has attempted to reach Ocasio-Cortez for comment.
