The University of Chicago is in hot water after a program description on its website caused quite a stir.

The Daily Caller reported that the university’s description of a research program appeared to be offered only to “underrepresented minority groups” to the exclusion of everyone else.

According to the website, the University of Chicago Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Physics description indicates it is available to underrepresented minorities, including Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, and women. It offers those groups an opportunity for undergrads to work within a research group.

The Daily Caller News Foundation questioned why the 10-week program excluded undergraduates who were not in an underrepresented minority group. The REU responded that the program’s description on the website was incorrect and that it was “open to all.” They indicated they could not correct the information on the university’s website.

An REU spokesperson said, “That description is in error. Our program is open to all...I seem to have not been able to eliminate the statement from the web-o-sphere, despite my best efforts.”

The university began backpedaling just after Manhattan Institute senior fellow Christofer Rufo tweeted that the scholarship was “racially segregated.” Thursday, Rufo posted, “The University of Chicago is offering a racially segregated scholarship that explicitly prohibits white and Asian men from applying. This is a violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act—U Chicago is brazenly and openly violating the law.”

’s website notes that to be eligible for the REU program; students must be “U.S. citizens or permanent residents” working toward their undergraduate degree with “a concentration in physics or a related engineering field.” Students accepted into the program receive a $6,000 stipend for use on travel and housing reimbursements. Each summer, 10-15 students are awarded an internship in the REU program and work in either a laboratory or research group.
