When people are declared brain-dead, it’s common to pull the plug.

They’re never going to get out of bed, make decisions or be able to be alive without life support technically. However, one professor thinks we should keep them alive by using brain-dead people as surrogate mothers.

The Norwegian philosopher has started a hot controversial debate on the topic. Even though she calls the idea disturbing, she says it could give couples hope. Couples that can’t have children, such as gay couples or those that are not fertile, will be able to have babies via surrogate.

Dr. Anna Smajdor says it’s an option for women who want to have children but don’t want to carry a child. She thinks it will solve the problem of insufficient surrogate mothers.

The process would involve whole-body donation, or, as her research paper calls it, whole-body gestation donation. It would include women donating their bodies if they are brain-dead to be surrogate mothers.

Her research paper argues that this is an excellent option for women with health risks preventing them from carrying a child. Fox News says, “‘We cannot yet forego the uterus altogether for the reproduction of our species,’ Smajdor stated. ‘But we can transfer the risks of gestation to those who are no longer able to be harmed by them.’”

Smajdor says that male bodies can also be used to gestate. According to her, this would increase the number of bodies and make feminists feel better. She acknowledges that this is something feminists fight against but thinks that she has a solution to that as well.

She further points out that brain death is used for organ donation, which should be no different. However, she does point out that no one knows if you can keep a brain-dead person alive for the nine months, it takes to produce a child.

Many are appalled by the idea. It’s been compared to books and papers where women are forced to have children or are born through artificial wombs. The Daily Mail says, “Tom Farr, from Manchester, tweeted that he can ‘imagine few things more horrifying, dystopian, and signifying of total societal moral collapse than harvesting the bodies of dead women and keeping them functionally “alive” as surrogates.’”

Do you think brain-dead women should be kept alive to be used as surrogates?
