The Justice Department has reportedly asked the Federal Elections Commission not to investigate New York Congressman George Santos amid a dual investigation by federal prosecutors working on the case.

Fox News reports this latest twist in the saga of Congressman George Santos. It has been a bumpy ride for the newly elected Congressman as he has been called out on inconsistencies between what he told the public about his background and the reality of his background.

The Washington Post reports that the Public Integrity Section has requested relevant documents from the FEC. This is based on reporting by anonymous sources that spoke with the Washington Post. This suggests that Santos is being investigated for issues with his campaign finances.

Fox News reports that Santos has already admitted to "embellishing" parts of his resume. For example, it was uncovered that he appeared to tell mistruths about his educational background, employment history, and even his Jewish family background. Now, he is facing a potential investigation into how his campaign finances were run. Santos hasn't been upfront about where various funds came from to support his campaign.

Thomas Datwyler, a campaign finance treasurer, is listed on a campaign filing as the treasurer for George Santos, but he says he has yet to work for the campaign. Datwyler claims that he was offered the job but turned it down.

According to Fox News, the FEC wrote a letter to Datwyler earlier this week that said in part: "knowingly and willfully making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation to a federal government agency, including the Federal Election Commission, is punishable."

Datwyler's lawyer responded: "On Monday we informed the Santos campaign that Mr. Datwyler would not be serving as treasurer. It appears there’s a disconnect between that conversation and the filings [Wednesday] which we did not authorize."

It is a developing story that still likely has many twists and turns before it all plays out.
