Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has offered some insights into what he thinks about the court's future after a very active session in 2022.

Justice Kavanaugh stated that he is "optimistic" about the future of the Supreme Court. The Washington Examiner reports that Kavanaugh's assessment of the future of the Supreme Court comes after many observers say that this was one of the most divisive years for the Supreme Court in recent history.

Kavanaugh spoke at an event at Notre Dame and said that one of the misunderstandings about how the court operates relates to their disagreements. He said that justices frequently have disagreements about the application of the law, but he said those disagreements are "more nuanced than they are sometimes portrayed."

He summed up his feelings on the matter by saying, “I’m optimistic about the court, I’m optimistic about the country, I’m optimistic about my colleagues."

He went on to offer praise for his fellow justices on the court. He says that they all have great relationships, both professionally and personally. He praised former Justice Stephen Breyer by saying he could not have been more welcoming to Kavanaugh when he joined the court. He also praised Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who he said is "off to a great start."

There have been a lot of discussions about the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and the divisive nature of that court after a very volatile session in 2022. Only 29% of the decisions made by the court in 2022 were unanimous. The Supreme Court heard 66 cases in 2022, and 14 were decided in a 6-3 split, with all justices voting according to their political alignments.

The Washington Examiner noted that Justice Elena Kagan said the court needed to win back the public's confidence by "acting more like a court" after the July 2022 decision overturned Roe v. Wade.
