According to a report by The Hill, approximately 225,000 new acres in a Minnesota wilderness area in the northeastern region of the state will be protected by the Biden administration.

Officials of the Interior Department confirmed the action Thursday during a call with reporters.

The proposed action will be in effect for 20 years, according to officials. The plan will protect some parts of the Rainy River watershed and includes lands ceded in 1854 to the Chippewa Band of Native Americans along with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The announcement by the Department of the Interior states mining activity in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is prohibited in an effort to protect the watershed and the environment from contamination caused by mining activities.

In a statement, Director of Interior Haaland said, “The Department of the Interior takes seriously our obligations to steward public lands and waters on behalf of all Americans. Protecting a place like Boundary Waters is key to supporting the health of the watershed and its surrounding wildlife, upholding our Tribal trust and treaty responsibilities, and boosting the local recreation economy.”

In a move made last year by the DOI canceling two mineral leases held by Twin Metals Minnesota located in Superior National Forest outside of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness along with Thursday’s decision, domestic mining companies are prohibited from operating in the region and tapping into the forest’s extensive mineral resources.

The lack of mining in this area by Twin Metals means a loss of about 88 percent of the cobalt, copper, nickel, and platinum-group elements used in the United States.

Fox News reports China, along with other countries and nations that support severe human rights concerns, continue to dominate the mineral supply chain on a global basis. The news outlet also reports the State Department recently signed an agreement allowing the financing of projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has a massive supply of cobalt.

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rep. Bruce Westerman pointed out on Thursday, “If Democrats were serious about developing renewable energy sources and breaking China’s stranglehold on the global market, they would be flinging open the doors to responsible mineral development here in the U.S.” “We cannot have a future of renewable energy without minerals, period - not to mention their necessity to our defense systems, satellites, cellphones, and virtually every other advanced technology.”
