One of the oldest adages in politics is that elections have consequences.

That adage, according to Fox News, was proven when the new Republican House voted to rescind funding for 87,000 IRS agents that was approved in the Orwellian named Inflation Reduction Act.

Critics pointed out at the time that such an increase in the IRS staff was designed to set loose auditors on the working and middle class to extract more money for the federal government. The bill called the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act would prohibit funding for new audits. It leaves in place funding for customer service and IT services. The bill would save the federal government $70 billion.

Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb, one of the co-sponsors of the bill, stated, “The last thing the American people need right now are more audits from an out-of-control, bloated IRS. The Inflation Act funding for IRS would lead to the hiring of 87,000 new IRS employees tasked with raising enough revenue to pay for Democrats’ Green New Deal priorities.”

Smith also noted, “Our bill leaves in place funding for customer service and IT improvements because IRS is in desperate need of reform, but it protects middle-class families from audits they cannot afford.”

A spokesperson for Smith’s office mentioned that the original provision was designed to harass the working and middle class with audits. “Congressional Democrats and the Biden administration have made clear that up to 90% of their new audits will target middle-class families and small businesses. This score again demonstrates the extent to which they are plundering working-class Americans in order to hand billions of dollars out to profitable businesses to buy electric trucks for their fleets, fuel for their airplanes and install large scale wind and solar across America’s landscapes.”

Congressional Democrats, who opposed the bill, pointed to a Congressional Budget Office estimate that it would cost the federal government a net $114 billion over the next decade.

The Gateway Pundit cited a study that suggested that IRS audits target the poor at five times the rate of the more well-to-do. The IRS also has a history of targeting conservative groups for harassment.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy celebrated the passage of the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act on Twitter,
