The Western Journal reports that Illinois’s latest entry into the dysfunctional law sweepstakes, the Safe-T Act, went into effect at the first of the year.
The Orwellian named Safe-T Act has several provisions that will make life easier for criminals and much more difficult for their victims. The act will, according to Townhall:
Place a time limit for when defendants are considered flight risks, meaning that a suspect who has been given an ankle monitor can leave their home for 48 hours before law enforcement can search for them.

Trespassing is changed from a class A misdemeanor to a class B misdemeanor. The provision means that police cannot arrest nonviolent trespassers but issue them a citation.

The act also restricts law enforcement officers' use of force. It mandates training in such areas as “de-escalation,” “crisis intervention,” and “racial and ethnic sensitivity.

Thankfully, the state Supreme Court ruled the act’s pretrial and bail provisions unconstitutional. The provision would have eliminated cash bail.

Kankakee County State Attorney Jim Rowe, a party to the lawsuit against the elimination of cash bail, said, “Today’s ruling affirms that we are still a government of the people and that the Constitutional protections afforded to the citizens of Illinois – most notably the right to exercise our voice with our vote – are inalienable.

Concern about the dangerous effects of the new law is widespread.
Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau said, “When I said that this is the most dangerous law I’ve ever seen, I believe that.”
Chicago saw 600 homicides in 2022, higher than either New York or Los Angeles. Most analysts believe that the Safe-T Act will cause that number to increase.
Nevertheless, Illinois House Speaker Welch went on the attack against Republicans who want to repeal the Safe-T Act. Ignoring the issues with the law, he said, “They want to repeal a whole lot more than the safety net. They want to repeal women’s rights. They want to repeal labor rights. They want to repeal civil rights like marriage equality. They want to repeal every right we’ve earned in this country.”
