Most politicians will at least make a show of reaching across the partisan divide to look for support.

One maxim in politics is that political power is increased by addition rather than subtraction.

According to the New York Post, New York Governor Hochul has expressed another idea. Noting that New York State, albeit deep blue, has several Republicans, she advised 5.4 million GOP New Yorkers who did not like her policies or conditions in the Empire State to “Jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK? You are not New Yorkers.”

The Post noted that New York State had already lost 1.5 million residents, fed up with high taxes, crime, and COVID-19 restrictions, over the previous decade. The refugees from New York took with them tax revenues, electoral votes, and House seats, diluting the state’s political and economic strength.

Fast forward to January, with Hochul celebrating her election as Governor of New York. Perhaps forgetting what she had said in August, showing Republicans the door, she lamented the loss of her state’s population. She even pledged to fix the problems that are driving New Yorkers away.

She said, “We must and will make our state safe … we have to make our state more affordable … And we must reverse the trend of people leaving our state in search of lower costs and opportunities elsewhere.”

Governor Hochul certainly has a difficult job ahead of her. Many New Yorkers chaffed at the harsh COVID-19 lockdowns, which contrasted with red states such as Texas and Florida, which balanced the need to fight the pandemic with keeping society functioning and prosperous.

New York imposes very high personal and corporate taxes. The state ranks low in terms of personal and business freedom. Crime, especially in New York City, is rampant.

Hochul has tried to reform the crime and bail reform laws that many analysts believe have contributed to the crime wave, only to be shot down by progressive Democrats in the state legislature.

In her speech, Governor Hochul did not refer to her remarks to Republicans to leave made in August. Nor did she admit that the main factor contributing to the exodus of New Yorkers to friendlier states has been Democratic policies that she had supported in the past. She needed to lay out a specific program to make New York State an attractive place for its residents.
