Usually, when a celebrity believes that their ability to act or sing gives them the entitlement to take their political opinions seriously, eye-rolling is the usual result.

However, according to the New York Post, a group of the rich, famous, and woke went beyond just talking and started actively pursuing a social justice cause that resulted in a near-fatal tragedy.

The Bail Project, financed by such a-listers as John Legend, Danny Glover, and Virgin Galactic’s Sir Richard Branson, has devoted itself to bailing out petty criminals whom they believe have been victimized by an unjust judicial system. With that goal in mind, the organization paid the $3,000 bond for a man named Rashawn Gaston-Anderson, who had been arrested for burglary.

Six days after he walked free in December 2021, Gaston-Anderson shot a waiter named Chengyan Wang 11 times in a Los Vegas establishment called Shanghai Taste. Though seven bullets hit him, Wang survived the shooting, albeit with lingering injuries. However, the incident is causing long-lasting consequences.

Gaston-Anderson copped a plea deal that is sending him away to prison for seven to 18 years. He is suing many people for the injuries he sustained in the shooting. However, Wang does not believe that punishment is enough.

Wang is suing the Bail Project, Gaston-Anderson, and Shanghai Plaza owner US Hui De Real Estate Investment Corp for $15,000 each in damages. His lawyer, Kory Kaplan, suggested that it was a miracle that Wang survived. “He’s got scars all over his body. He can’t move his shoulder over a certain height. I don’t know how (the bullets) missed a vital artery.”

The Bail Project has shut down its operation pending a restructuring. According to the UK Daily Mail, the organization’s spokesperson, Cameron Pike, stated, “It’s an absolute tragedy and The Bail Project, myself speaking for The Bail Project found it absolutely shocking.”

Nevertheless, Deputy General Counsel for The Bail Project, Katie Poor, doubled down on support for the organization’s mission. “We provide free bail assistance and what we call community release with support which includes rides to and from court, court notifications and we attempt to navigate services in the community based on our clients’ self-identified needs.”

The group’s website states, “Along with our bailouts and direct services, we use the power of human stories and data to make the public case for ending cash bail and investing in communities and alternatives to incarceration.”
