Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is a failed candidate to be the first openly gay President of the United States.

His performance in the cabinet post overseeing roads, bridges, railroads, airports, and seaports has been a little to write about. As a consolation prize, President Joe Biden appointed Buttigieg Secretary of Transportation.

Just the News reports that the Transportation Department Inspector General has issued a report that found Buttigieg wanting to track and get control of a critical supply chain problem exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The supply chain disruption concerns the importation of aircraft parts. With sufficient aircraft parts, the ability to fly people and cargo from one part of the nation to the other will be protected.

The Inspector General reported, “We identified several vulnerabilities that increase the risk of aviation supply chain disruptions, including the lack of visibility into supply chains, dependence on sole-source or limited suppliers, and lack of access to rare earth metals and elements.”

Aircraft parts that the United States needs to keep flying come from various foreign sources, including France and Canada. However, China, which produces 2% of the aircraft parts used in the United States, sells some crucial products, including batteries.

The report suggested that the supply chain for aircraft parts needs more visibility, meaning that manufacturers can only ascertain and deal with shortages if they arise. The problem has been masked by the pandemic, which decreased air travel and thus the need for aircraft maintenance. However, as air travel starts to rebound, the supply chain problem will likely become more apparent.

What is Secretary Buttigieg doing besides dealing with supply chain issues? For one thing, he is flying around in a private jet, contrary to his pronouncements about carbon emissions that are said to cause climate change. For another, he has busied himself promoting such issues as “environmental justice,” “racial equity,” and the perceived need to encourage more union jobs in building transportation infrastructure.

Former HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson said it best when he suggested that Buttigieg is pursuing a “Christmas wish list of the woke left.”
