One of the sad effects of the Defund the Police movement, bail “reform,” and other social justice laws has been an explosion of retail thefts across the country.

Thieves will run into stores, steal everything not nailed down, and then flee with their ill-gotten gains. They will then sell them on the black market.

The New York Post reports on one of the most brazen retail thefts in recent memory. A group f women in Orange, California, entered a grocery store.

While five of the women distracted employees and patrons, two others went to the back and stole a safe with $9,000 inside it. They covered the safe with a blanket in a shopping cart as they left the store.

Video caught the entire incident in a family-owned business located 30 miles outside downtown Los Angeles. Some of the women had masks that some people still wear because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of their faces were readily identifiable. The robbery took place on December 17 at 11 AM.

Orange Police Chief Dan Adams did not mince words in his displeasure at the hit-and-run crime. “This is heartbreaking, especially during this holiday season. I hope these women are caught, jailed, and held to answer for their felonious crimes.”

Generally, modern retail thieves rob products from store shelves, often being careful to rob only the amount that is below the threshold for felony theft. Store employees and patrons are often afraid to try to stop hit-and-run retail thieves for fear of being hurt. The idea has been that even if these thieves are caught, they will only receive a slap on the wrist from progressive prosecutors.

The robbery of a safe for $9,000 is an escalation. The amount of money stolen is a massive haul for the few minutes the thieves took to steal it. The Orange Police Department is currently looking for the thieves. It is to be hoped, as Chief Adams suggested, that their punishment will be severe.
