That the mass influx of illegal migrants has placed a strain on southern border states has been a given ever since President Joe Biden threw open the borders.

However, partly thanks to a policy instituted by southern governors such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott to bus illegal aliens to northern sanctuary cities, the problem has been spread nationwide. With the impending end of Title 42, a Trump-era policy that used the COVID-19 pandemic to expel illegal migrants, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has started to sound the alarm.

According to the Daily Caller, Mayor Adams claims that city services for illegal migrants have been strained to the breaking point and may need to have their budgets cut.

“We have been told in no uncertain terms that, beginning today, we should expect an influx of busses from the border and that more than 1,000 additional asylum seekers will arrive in New York City every week. We urgently need help, and it’s time for our state and federal partners to act — especially those in Congress who refuse to provide the financial resources or issue temporary work authorizations necessary for these individuals to live correctly.

“Our shelter system is full, and we are nearly out of money, staff and space. Truth be told, if corrective measures are not taken soon, we may very well be forced to cut or curtail programs New Yorkers rely on, and the pathway to house thousands more is uncertain. These are not choices we want to make, but they may become necessary, and I refuse to be forced to choose new arrivals over current New Yorkers. I’ll say it again — we need a plan, we need assistance, and we need it now.”

So far, Mayor Adams’ pleas have fallen on deaf ears. As a result, according to the UK Daily Mail, he proposes that the New York City Council’s discretionary budget of $563 million be cut in half to deal with the added expense. The proposal is already getting some pushback from the City Council.

A spokesperson for Council Speaker Adrienne Adams made the Council’s displeasure known. “The Council heard from numerous non-profit organizations filling the gaps of essential work for New Yorkers and asylum seekers in our communities without reimbursement from this administration; these are the recipients of council funding."

“The mayor is starving city agencies of staff and resources, leaving non-profits to fill the gap without his support, and now he wants to take funding away from these non-profit service providers.”

Nevertheless, Mayor Adams warned that absent help from New York State or the federal government, every service from the city, from sanitation to law enforcement, would be negatively impacted.
