According to Fox News, the University of Oklahoma has banned TikTok on its phones and other devices. The ban resulted from an executive order issued by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt. The University of Oklahoma was included in the ban because it is a publicly funded institution of higher learning.
David Horton, the Chief Information Officer and Senior Associate Vice President of the University of Oklahoma imparted the news in a mass email to students and staff on December 20. “In compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order 2022-33, effective immediately, no University employee or student shall access the TikTok application or website on University-owned or operated devices, including OU wired and wireless networks.

“As a result of the Executive Order, access to the TikTok platform will be blocked and cannot be accessed from the campus network. University-administered TikTok accounts must be deleted and alternate social media platforms utilized in their place.”

The email also cited that the order resulted from “ongoing national and cybersecurity concerns with the TikTok application.”

Governor Stitt was more direct and concise when he announced his executive order on Twitter on December 8. “TikTok is now banned from state devices and state networks in Oklahoma. We will not participate in helping the Chinese Communist Party gain access to government information.”

The Governor also stated, "Maintaining the cybersecurity of state government is necessary to continue to serve and protect Oklahoma citizens and we will not participate in helping the Chinese Communist Party gain access to government information.”

Another Oklahoma school, Northeastern State University, has also banned TikTok. Dan Mabery, the Vice President for University Relations, stated, “Northeastern State University is complying with Gov. Stitt’s Executive Order 2022-33. Therefore, university-owned/leased/managed equipment, including the NSU network, may not be used to download or access the TikTok application or website. As a result of the Executive Order, access to the TikTok social media platform will be blacklisted and cannot be accessed from the campus network.”

The Daily Caller notes that several other universities, including the University of Georgia system, are also banning TikTok.
A spokesman for the Chinese social network protested the decisions, stating that the bans were “political gestures.”
