Disney is facing a significant boycott of one of its most anticipated films in recent years.

Breitbart reports that Avatar: The Way of Water is facing calls to be boycotted by various Native American groups throughout the country. The groups calling for the boycott say that the movie plays on white saviorship and cultural appropriation.

Navajo artist and co-chair of Indigenous Pride Los Angeles, Yuè Begay, said that the movie is racist and that it must be boycotted.

Begay tweeted the following about it:

“Join Natives & other Indigenous groups around the world in boycotting this horrible & racist film.”

“Our cultures were appropriated in a harmful manner to satisfy some [white flag emoji] man’s savior complex.”

James Cameron is the person behind this film. Begay shared a statement Cameron made to the Guardian in 2010 in which Cameron opposed the building of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam in the Amazon. He was concerned that building that dam would displace Native American tribes in the area. Cameron even said that the conflict between those who wanted to build the dam and the native tribes in the area inspired him to write the first Avatar movie.

Cameron told the Guardian the following:

“I felt like I was 130 years back in time watching what the Lakota Sioux might have been saying at a point when they were being pushed and they were being killed and they were being asked to displace and they were being given some form of compensation.”

He continued by saying:

“This was a driving force for me in the writing of ‘Avatar’ – I couldn’t help but think that if they [the Lakota Sioux] had had a time-window and they could see the future… and they could see their kids committing suicide at the highest suicide rates in the nation… because they were hopeless and they were a dead-end society – which is what is happening now – they would have fought a lot harder.”

However, Begay received 12,000 retweets and 47,000 likes for her tweets calling for the boycott of the new Avatar film.

One Twitter user tweeted the following in support: “It was always obvious Cameron was profiting off appropriation and the white savior. ‘They would have fought harder.’ Go kick rocks, Cameron.”

So, it appears that Disney might have a significant boycott for a film it hoped would do very well in theaters. There is much to be seen about how this will play out, but the boycott is on.
