Conservative Students Are PUSHING BACK Against The Woke Movement On College Campuses

Student rebellion has been a feature of many college campuses since the mid-1960s.

The anti-Vietnam War movement was just one of many causes young people took up while studying for a degree. However, modern woke culture at too many colleges and universities has sparked a new student revolt, this time coming from the right.

The Daily Caller reports that the right-leaning student rebellion is manifesting in student-run newspapers. Every college and university has a sanctioned student newspaper. However, too many of these periodicals adhere to a down-the-line leftist tilt, arguing for such causes as Critical Race Theory, defunding the police, and curbing free speech.

Left-wing bias in student newspapers even exists at Brigham Young University, run by the Mormon Church and considered one of the most conservative institutions of higher learning in the United States. Thomas Stevenson, a student at BYU, is the editor of an alternative newspaper, the Cougar Chronicle, founded to give conservative students a voice in the public square.

Stevenson said, “Even though BYU is considered one of the most conservative schools, according to media bias sites, our official school newspaper, the Daily Universe, still leans liberal. An independent, further-left paper also existed at the time of our founding, but there was no independent conservative reporting publication that we knew of. … So we are the only student run publication at this point that is openly conservative or speaks on topics from a conservative perspective.”

Stevenson suggested that the Cougar Chronicle has found an eager audience on the BYU campus.

“There is a need for the Cougar Chronicle because students are not getting these views from their peers nearly anywhere else. They might see it nationally, but not locally at their own school. We want the main takeaway from our articles to be that as a conservative student, at what is supposed to be one of the most conservative schools in the country, you are not alone in what you think even if it seems that way.”

The Cougar Chronicle is just one of many right-leaning student newspapers springing up on college campuses around the country.

They include the Capstone Free Press at the University of Alabama, the Liberty Jacket at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Texas Horn at the University of Texas at Austin, the Pitt News at the University of Pittsburg, and the Soap Box at Louisiana State University. They have in common a desire to provide a narrative that opposes the woke culture that prevails at too many colleges and universities.
