One reason the United States is exceptional is that it is number one in the world in charitable giving.

What government social programs can’t or won’t do, ordinary people step in to help.

American generosity is no greater exemplified than that which benefits military veterans and first responders. Ever since the 9/11 attacks, Americans have developed a greater appreciation of those who volunteer to fight in foreign wars and those who face crime at home. Many are aware of the cost veterans and first responders entail, both physical and mental.

Fox News reports that the latest winner of the long-running reality TV show, Survivor, had one particular veteran in mind when he announced that he would donate all of his winnings to helping people who have come home from the wars with mental scars. When asked what he would do with the $1 million in prize money from Survivor, Mike Gabler surprised many with his response.

"And I'm going to donate the entire prize — the entire million-dollar prize, in my father's name, Robert Gabler, who was a Green Beret — to veterans in need who are recovering from psychiatric problems, PTSD and curb the suicide epidemic."

Taken aback by the heart valve surgeon’s generosity, Survivor host Jeff Probst asked him about his finances, both now and growing up.

Gabler responded, "No, I've worked very hard, I've been fortunate. But, you know, I realized being through this experience, I am rich at home. I have an amazing life at home. I have an amazing family. I have amazing friends. I need to be a better husband, I need to be a better father, I need to be a better brother, I need to be a better son. I'm going to do all those things just like all of us are going to do that when we go home.”

Gabler, at 53, is the second oldest person to have won on Survivor. He said that viewers of the show saw some fantastic things in the episodes that aired this year. He wanted to cap the season off by doing something else remarkable, giving back to veterans like his father. He also noted that being on Survivor was a positive experience.

He had nothing but good things to say about his time on the show, which took place on the island of Fiji this year.
