The Los Angeles Police Department had a big announcement to make recently, according to Fox News.

The LAPD said it had arrested 18 suspects between ages 15 and 20 in a significant organized retail theft operation that it carried out over two weeks.

Organized retail theft incidents have occurred at four area shoe and clothing retail outlets, according to police. Police say the suspects stole massive quantities of clothing valued at approximately $23,000.

The suspects were arrested for violations of California Penal code §490.4 PC (Organized Retail Theft) and 487 PC (Grand Theft), a felony. All of the 18 suspects either live in Los Angeles itself or Los Angeles County.

Police also stated that eight vehicles were impounded for this investigation and that all stolen merchandise was returned to the retailers.

According to the City of Los Angeles, the same suspects are believed to be involved in other incidents of theft from retailers, with an estimated $90,000 worth of merchandise stolen.

Those who know anything about other theft incidents are asked to contact law enforcement about any details they might have.

The announcement came one day after Robert Luna was sworn in as the nation's largest sheriff's department leader. He will officially begin his term next week as the 34th Los Angeles County sheriff.

Luna is ready to get things off the ground and running. He said he would focus on accountability and cooperation with elected officials. He also wants to work on reducing crime rates in a city that has seen surging rates of both property and violent crime.

Fox News reports that he said the following at his swearing-in ceremony:

"It is our responsibility to call out bad policing, and we will do so — that's an element of keeping the public trust."

He is going to have his work cut out for him. He is taking over from one-term Democrat Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Villanueva often clashed with the county Board of Supervisors during that one term. He was also a vocal opponent of the Black Lives Matter riots, but it wasn't enough to prevent those situations from frequently spinning out of control in the city of Los Angeles.

Thus, many are understandably worried about what the next sheriff may or may not be able to do moving forward.
