Abortion measures were on the ballot in several states in Tuesday's election, including in the ruby-red state of Kentucky.

In Kentucky, voters were asked to confirm via a constitutional amendment that residents had NO legal right to an abortion. The public voted down that measure in Kentucky. Meanwhile, in Vermont, California, and Michigan, the public was asked to vote to protect their abortion rights in those states. In all three states, abortion measures were protected.

The Associated Press reported that Kentucky's measure failed by 52.6% to 47.5%, with 86% of the ballots counted.

Michigan voted to create a set of reproductive rights under the state Constitution, and that measure was passed with 55.7% of the vote in favor of creating this measure. That was the result, with 87% of the ballots counted. This was a more significant share of the vote than Democrat Gretchen Whitmer won in her re-election bid in the state.

In Vermont and California, the wins for abortion rights activists were even more significant. This is even though one state elected a Democratic Governor, and the other re-elected a Republican. Regardless, it was the abortion rights questions that indeed carried the day.

The Vermont measure supporting abortion rights for the state Constitution passed with 77.4% of the vote in that state. It was more competitive, but it still carried 65.1% of the vote, with 41% of ballots counted.

NPR reported that the California measure is somewhat vague in how it is written, but it seems like this measure would permit abortion under virtually any circumstances. It looks like it would go even further than what the original protections guaranteed by Roe v Wade would allow.

Democrats indeed turned out to support abortion rights, and that seems to be the reason why they were so adamant about adding these measures to ballots across various states in the country.

Many Democrats listed abortion as their top issue or one of their top issues for coming out to vote in this most recent election. Knowing this probably made it easier for national Democrats to push abortion measures to be put on the ballot. It might have driven some turnout in certain races in competitive states. This is a strategy used by both parties to try to get their voters out to vote for the party's preferred candidates. It seems like this might have been the way Democrats were going on this one in this most recent election.
