Hollywood Murderer: ‘Riverdale’ Actor Receives His Sentence

Actor Ryan Grantham pled guilty to murdering his mother in March 2020 as she was at home playing piano.

Per the CBC, evidence suggests Grantham had been viewing violent footage on the dark web. Sentenced to life in prison, Grantham will be eligible for parole after he serves 14 years, according to a spokesperson for the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver, Canada.

After shooting his mother in the back of the head, killing her, the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Riverdale” actor, then 21, allegedly filled his car the next day with Molotov cocktails, ammunition, three firearms, and camping supplies. In his possession, he had a map with directions to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s residence.

While he planned to kill the Prime Minister, Grantham instead drove to Hope, British Columbia, then changed direction with a plan to visit Simon Fraser University, where he was a student or Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge. According to CBC, he intended to commit mass violence.

Having a change of heart, Grantham turned himself in at the Vancouver police station, admitting his involvement with his mother’s killing and receiving a second-degree murder charge. According to CBC, NBC News reported Justice Kathleen Ker said the case was heartbreaking and tragic during Grantham’s hearing.

She recounted some gruesome details of Barbara Waite’s murder before passing down her decision. According to Variety, Grantham used a .22 rifle, Daily Wire reported.

Grantham’s sister, Lisa, noted her mother was her “best friend” and that her mother was “vulnerable, and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life.” She and her mother’s sister said they feared Grantham’s “release from prison.”

On a phone call with NBC News, Grantham’s lawyer, Chris Johnson, said his client expressed remorse to the court for killing his mother. He shared that Grantham, who had begun acting at nine years old, had mental health issues and was not being treated.

A psychiatrist said he murdered his mother so she would not discover the acts of violence he planned to commit. In prison, Grantham is getting psychiatric treatment.

According to NBC News, Johnson agreed with the court’s decision and said, “It’s unusual circumstances, for sure. I think the result was a fair result, given everything that occurred.
